Bio

As he watched the third dump truck full of sheetrock and lumber drive away, Jason Lear realized how much waste he had created with the flick of his pencil. It was 1998, and Jason was watching the construction of his first major home remodel design. He realized then how much responsibility came with designing and building a single house. When Jason founded his own design/build firm years later, he committed himself to creating a company that would always pay attention and would foster a smarter, ever-improving approach to building.

Over the last ten years, that company, Batt + Lear, has become one of the leaders of Seattle’s green building movement. Jason’s firm builds high-performance buildings, and was the only company in 2007 to certify a 5-Star Built Green Remodel in Seattle. This year, Batt + Lear expects to certify two more 5-star Built Green Remodels in Seattle. Batt + Lear has received numerous accolades, including the 2008 Built Green Hammer Award given by the Master Builders' Association.

As founding Principal, Jason has focused his own learning on how to create massively more energy efficient houses, using nothing fancy at all. This learning has resulted in a significant knowledge base around the house as a system, and the importance of both a holistic approach to building and attention to detail in every step. Jason believes that in this climate it is possible, right now, to build homes that cost $200/year or less to heat! He and his firm have completed three homes that may already be meeting that mark. Only time will tell.

Jason Lear received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and International Studies from Yale University.
